July 18, 2016. Jack Rajala. The screen porch at the Lodge on Wolf Lake. The last of thousands of forestry discussions I was privileged to have with my father and mentor. And I got to share it with my son Ethan.
Part I: Jack points out trees that are done growing. I ask, "for the year?". Jack pauses, breathes deeply, and metaphorically replies, "Forever."
Part II: Jack Rajala discusses White Pine pruning strategy with his grandson Ethan, who leads the Rajala White Pine pruning crew. Ethan is explaining to Grandpa that we have so many trees to prune, that to get through all of our stands, we need to prioritize which trees to prune. Grandpa approves.
Needless to say, it was difficult to hold back tears.
